Is there such thing as HomeKit Best Practices? There should be.
Is there such a thing as Homekit Best Practices, or write-ups attempting to do that? By this I mean things that are mostly independent of the homekit you use. This would be things like:
if you could/should use a second appleID dedicated to just your home,
how your wifi should be configured
how to backup your homekit configuration in case something goes crazy and deletes your rooms (backup using Controller for Homekit, btw)
how to how to structure your groups so that they are expandable without having to rebuild your automations.
How/whether to use wifi range extenders with a different SSID name and possibly on a different channel and to pair your low-bandwidth wifi devices to that so that you can keep your main router's config free from directly showing all 30 wifi lightbulbs (if that's your thing).
how to extend range to any bluetooth devices using old iphones.
How to make your homekit configuration easy to repair if a device gets damaged / completely stops working so that you don't have to rebuild your automations.
And probably lots more.
Anyway, does something like this exist? also, regarding numbers 4 and 7, does anyone know if there is a way to simply add devices with one step? For example, if I have a group of lamps that are grouped, and I have an automation that controls that group, does adding another lamp to the group automatically add it to the automation? Because it really should. But I don't think it does. I tried looking for a way to make each device its own single-member group so that if a device dies, I could just put a new device in its slot without having to rebuild the automations associated with it, and wasn't able to make this work. the Apple Home app doesn't allow for creating groups with only one device, but other apps do allow it. And a group that has been created can persist with zero devices in it, but upon deletion of the last device, all of the automations associated with the group get disconnected I think. Anyway, I just want there to be documentation of how to build things to minimize the need to rebuild them in the future. Any thoughts are appreciated.

The Star icon indicates that Amiibo is added to the Wishlist. You can add or remove Amiibo from the Wishlist by pressing the Star button on the Amiibo details screen's top right. Nintendo Switch made triple-A gaming experience available on the go. It's unique to play the games you like anywhere you want. However, for Amiibo, this is not true. It is so inconvenient to take your Amiibo collection with you when you travel. An NFC tag called N2elite allows you to write up to 200 amiibo on a small tag to solve this. Ally – Collect, and Backup is made to manage N2 fully. You can read your N2 tag, set an Active slot, delete Amiibo from the tag, clear N2 and write up to 10 amiibo at once. We have limited writing batches to 10 as writing takes time, and it is a bit weird to wait when it's writing. We believe 10 is an optimal size of the batch to write. You can write as many batches as you like.
To remove Amiibo from N2, you can tap on the Amiibo slot to open the details screen and tap on the Delete button. You can also tap and hold on the Amiibo slot from the N2 screen to open quick actions and select Remove from n2 quick action.
Randomize Amiibo serial on N2
If the writing mode is enabled, there will be an extra action in the quick actions menu to Randomize Amiibo serial. This function is added if you want to use Amiibo as many times as you want without a need to wait till another day in games like Zelda – Breath of the Wild. The good thing is the actual Amiibo data dump won't be affected, and only an N2 copy of the Amiibo will have a different serial number. There is a bunch of people who like to express their creativity by creating their own Amiibo. Those people are doing it so well. We've seen examples of the beautiful, unique custom paint on NTAG215 cards or tokens, custom-made plush toys, etc. We've made Ally – Collect and Backup a number one app for everyone who likes Amiibo, and we couldn't avoid those people. Unfortunately, all Amiibo are encrypted by the proprietary key, and distributing this key is illegal. If you have a key file, Ally collect and backup allow you to import the key file (one joint file or two parts of the key file) to activate the writing mode (it's called dark side mode). Once the dark side mode is activated, Ally will enable the writing mode from the Amiibo collection view in the Amiibo details screen. The correspondence message will be displayed under the WRITE TO TAG button, meaning that you can safely write to NTAG215 tags. The app is smart enough to understand if you are wiring to NTAG215 or N2. It will automatically detect what tag are you writing on, and the app will use the correspondence writing method. Pixonic did minor tweaks to targeting to address shooting Ao Mings in the air from the ground and vice versa, but according to Pixonic CM in Oct 2020 a major rework will not be considered until after Pixonic migrates to new servers in 2021; In Jan 2021 Pix stated improvement to targeting system will be worked with expected release in Aug 2021).
Lag (Status: According to Pixonic the 6.4 update should address lag along with server overhaul)

What is a typical day in your life like?
I get up at 4:30. I watch some YouTube, do some email, work on my writing or similar. I head to the gym at 7, shower and start my day around 8. I work in my home office or shop/lab, code and work on stuff, throughout the day. I could be busy all the way through to 8-9PM if I'm wrapped up in something, but not usually that busy.

No, I never was until my neck injury. While recovering I couldn't sleep more than about 4-5 hours max and just got into the habit. Since it was so productive for me, I just kept it up!

Did you create Robocopy, or know who did? I use that very regularly and much more efficient than using the GUI.
The secret dirt is that Robocopy was first written by MS colleague Kevin Allen, and he started sharing copies around in 1994ish. From there, and after many iterations and heavy-duty real-world feedback, robocopy ended up in the Windows Resource Kit, and then later merged into the core Windows package. In the beginning, Kevin was a very experienced programmer, but new to the Win32 API; so robocopy was one of his projects to educate himself about Windows programming. Later on, ITG used robocopy to routinely transfer many gigabytes of data around MS global offices, every night; it became very robust and battle-hardened. It is a long time now since Kevin was involved in the robocopy source code at all; it is maintained by the Windows team.
Did you create Microsoft Clippy? Will Clippy ever make a come back?
Noooo... but I was around at the time. We have Clippy now in the form of Siri and Google Assistant and Cortana, but there's no picture. That's all it was though, an early digital assistant.
I read on a Microsoft devblog that when windows got ported to 64bit pinball 3d was not ported because of bugs and the developers not being able to understand the code/not having enough time. It's a shame, because it was such an awesome game and I spent many hours playing it as a kid. Was the code messy due to being ported from Sam and do you think it could have been ported given enough time and expertise?
Basically what I did when I ported it was to maintain the central code "logic" loop of the game unchanged so that it would play just as it did on other platforms, and then "hooked" functionality coming out of it and going into it. So I rewrote the drawing code that did the actual drawing, but not he original code that wanted to do the drawing, if that makes sense. I changed the how, not why.
That meant, though, that at the very core of the game was a big bunch of code that we didn't touch or monkey with, because it 'just worked'. Apparently sometime after Vista, in 64-bit, there was a collision detection bug in Pinball.
From what I read, Raymond Chen looked at it and got the general idea of what was wrong but didn't want to touch the fragile old code. Raymond's one of the best debuggers I've met, so it wasn't a question of expertise but of time and resources.
Anyone on the team could have trivially fixed it I'm sure, but it sounds like no one "owned" the game anymore after I left, and it was more than just a random little bug to fix, it would have required a dev to be assigned to it, and there likely was no one free.

Hi! Just wanted to say, I still use MS-DOS regularly, on many of my older machines in my collection. Also Win3.x, Win9x etc How do you feel about computers becoming extremely dependent on 'cloud' services? I can still set up an old machine, install an old OS, install old software and have it all up and running within an hour or so, while modern software essentially requires cloud services for literally everything. What happens to that software once some random person out there decides that they don't want to support it anymore? Those cloud services go away? Are you concerned that future generations will not be able to experience anything from this era of computing? Considering computers were designed to be able to continually run the same software over and over as necessary, how can that apply if the bulk of this is lost when the cloud disappears? Or maybe this isn't a concern at all, and I'm just crazy...?
I already have hardware that refused to work because the cloud service that backs it has been abandoned or the company has gone out of business.
I worry that things become dependent on externals that aren't reliable long term, and I know what you mean... but fortunately Windows, once activated, runs perfectly well offline forever, really.

No, as long as you DO enjoy it when you're doing it, you're fine. There's an entire "spectrum" of people in the world and some of us have "special interests" with which we're a little obsessed, and tend to "hyperfocus". I'm one of those people but it's by no means the only way to do it!
I knew many great programmers who (a) didn't program in their spare time at home and (b) didn't continue to program recreationally after leaving it as a job.
If you can work regular 40 hours a week as a productive programmer, you'll be set!

If you get a job at a large company like Microsoft, and decide you're not happy, try moving INTERNALLY before looking for another job. You could work for 5 different companies over your career and they could all be Google, for example. Culture goes through and through, but every team has its own.

If you can put in a 35-40 hour week of solid work, you'll be fine. There are three buckets: the obsessives, like myself, who work as much as they can. Then the solid pros, who can turn out a ton of quality stuff in 40 hours. And then you have the slackers who surf Facebook at work and read reddit when they should be coding. As long as you're not in that group you're fine, and a balance is important. It is indeed a thing the successful people achieve it. It's not about how much code you write, it's about how much MORE time you spend coding than you want to, and that should be zero!
Lots of people are in careers they don't practice in their free time, in fact most. So it's a bonus if you're that way, but most people are NOT, so don't despair! You're normal!

I didn’t use windows after windows 7 for about 5 years. Back in august 2019 I finally rebuilt and upgraded my old PC and installed windows 10. The task manager in windows 10 is so amazing and powerful. I would imagine it’s something you wanted to implement in the 90s but didn’t have the tools or time. Right?
Indeed, I'm a big fan of the current task manager and what they've done with it! I wish there was a Dark mode, I wish it handled file lock tracking, and I've always got wish lists, but they've done a great job with it!

They're the worst estimate out there, except for all the others.
Mac is just as bad. It's a hard problem. I worked on it briefly, and to help solve it I kept track of the average time it had taken for a whole range of operations, like creating, moving, deleting, renaming a file, or moving a block of N bytes, etc. Then multiply by the number of those operations that remain. But even that can be wildly off in degenerate cases.

None whatsoever. In fact, the only commonality at all would likely be the PGM header on disk still traces its original layout to MS-DOS.
But rest assured there's NO code from MS-DOS inside NT, for example. It was a complete clean-slate design.

I love it, I just don't have any illusions that making a piece of code open-source somehow leads to higher quality. It makes it more available to me, which is great, but in reality, on a typical project there are going to be 1-5 people who really look at the code and then a dozen the sort of know it to make changes, and then consumers of the code who just call it. I don't see that those 1-5 people are any brighter than the people who'd be responsible for a product in a proprietary environment.
Now at a certain scale, like the Linux kernel maybe, you've got enough eyeballs looking at it that it makes a difference... that I could see!
What's the idea behind SYSKEY?
As I understand it, its function is to encrypt something called the SAM (Security Account Manager) database. This database stores hashes of user passwords, and is used to authenticate users when they supply their password.

As a total guess, I imagine our experience will eventually be just a UI device locally and everything else happens in the cloud on server hardware. So as you say, at some point your client hardware is "good enough" and then companies compete on the merits of their back-end services.

Make sure you're in a clean empty folder. Try the code from Episode 11, I just used it so I know that works! Clone it and build it in PlatformIO with no changes, and that'll tell you if your dev environment is set up and working properly.

At that point there must be kernel corruption or something going on in a driver or well below the surface, I guess. If TM can't kill it, no one can, and it's truly hung.

It's worked as far back as XP, and still works today in Windows 10, last time I checked. Windows Server 2003 and 2008 as well. Is checking the integrity of OS files before they're executed just not a priority?
An IBM engineer (David Bradley, I think) picked that combination to serve as a hardware reset. You can't fake it, you can't get around it. The PC knows it's really C_A_D when you do it.

Nope! My work on the shell would have been backported to it, but I didn't work directly on 98 or M3, other than they used our NT version of the shell code by then I think.

Check out the "Secret History of Task Manager" video for a description of "NTStress" and how we nightly tested, but there were professional testers, every line of code was code-reviewed, and so on.

I think so! It helped stem casual piracy, wasn't "cracked" for at least 18 months after we released it, and didn't unduly inconvenience users too often, I hope.
We were really aiming for the 95% case. Trying to catch the 95% of piracy that is people sharing keys, reusing their own keys on too many machines, getting keys off the web, that sort of thing. I think it accomplished that.

Do as many little program tasks as you can, and make sure you complete them, and SAVE them for the future so you can look back!
Try writing a little program to convert back and forth between roman numbers and regular numbers. Or fund the next highest multiple of 32, or count the number of it bits set in a byte. Or the real difference in seconds between two dates, that sort of thing. Real problems that you have to solve will help a great deal as they act as sort of a "forcing function" to make you get to the very end.

Spacebar would add a little "action" to the table, if I recall, and you could strike a balance of adding so much so often... but too much (ie: smash space too much) and it'll tilt.

Oh yeah, I've interviewed dozens or hundreds I'd bet. I'd like to ask "calibrating questons" like "Give me a funtion that takes a number and returns the next highest multiple of 32" or "count the number of bits that are set in it" to see how their basic coding skills were.
Then I usually liked to give a problem I was working on to see what it'd be like to actually work with the person.
I interviewed three times, once as an intern, once as full time, and then once to move to the Shell group. Each as an all-day affair, and very arduous. You have 2-3 hour long interviews in the AM, then a lunch interview, then 2-3 more hour long interviews in the PM, then a supper thing, etc... it's a long day!

And still, it doesn't provide a guaranteed solution to the problem. Between Tier 1 (Destrier) and Tier 4 (Ao Jun) there is also Tier 2 and Tier 3. That's where it gets painfully difficult to balance the system so that high-level players aren't able to disintegrate mid-levels with just one bot. We had some attempts at a similar algorithm with the Design and Analytics teams in 2019. During several months of tests we couldn't come up with a solid version, that we ourselves wouldn't be able to abuse as players.")

The name ethroll casino is already somewhat connected to the Internet's most famous slot machine. When the game was introduced, there weren't too many options for players to choose from, but when the games became popular, the name "ETH Roll" was suggested by the players themselves to signify that this is a game in which money can be won. This is true because the main aim of the game is to earn as much money as possible. The players will roll the card with the coins, hoping that they will land on an "X" or an "X-shaped" star. If the player gets five points, they win one unit of currency. In order to play the game, the player will have to download an iPhone or Android app onto their mobile devices. Wait until 9am to use the deep cleaning vacuum (we have a smaller Dyson v8 for everyday cleaning and a plug in Bissell Turbo plus for once a week. I just wish I could be more like Monica Geller in a Friends deep cut and have a smaller one to clean both of those.) 11am: Once everything seems in place and spotless, I head out for errands. My mother works at my hometown library and gets me all the new releases. I stop in to pick up my holds for the week and they tell me I won the summer reading challenge (read 32 books) and my prize is a Kindle Fire 7 HD! 12pm: Drive to the most convenient shopping center around. First Ulta for shampoo, conditioner and the Anastasia brow gel. I usually use the Coloupop Boss Brow but decided to try a higher end product that may last longer. I use $6 of Ulta points and $34 of a store credit balance. Just $34 owed. At Target I pick up Pixi Glow toner, quart Ziplocs, Febreeze and an oversized tie-dye crop tee. I get a $5 giftcard to use later because the beauty purchase was more than $25 itself. $53.51. Last stop is Whole Foods to get Oatly, 2 bags of Purely Elizabeth grain-free granola and a LaColombe draft latte. $15.59 2pm: We had made plans to meet up with K and Z for some drinks and food but D is running behind on the boat. 2 hours later we finally get in the car and meet them. Round of beers at the first place and round of drinks at the second, K pays. Stop into a jewelry store in the town where Z buys earrings for herself and snuck in a t-shirt that says "bridesmaid/best friend" for me. I just love her. . 5pm: Realize that it's Derby day and our usual bar is having an event, which thankfully died down by the time we arrive. The Islanders game is also on which annoys the hell out of me. We all order some drinks, wings, nachos and the cook makes us Italian bread zeppoles. I somehow manage to convince K to let me pay for once. Our favorite bartender is 33 so I tip him $33. $66 total 9pm: Get in at a surprisingly reasonable hour and am able to get quality sleep before tomorrow's long day. TOTAL: $169.10 Day 7: 7am: Sleep in a bit, enjoy my cold brew and get in some time reading Majesty by Katharine McGee (highly recommend the first book American Royals) while the cat has zoomies that won't end. 10am: Feeling restless and decide on a 2 hour walk alone. Listen to the sunday NYT Daily and Smartless (new podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes). Back home and get ready for the day. 2pm: Celebrating Labor Day sunday with our quarantine bubble friends and their kids. We're in charge of getting sides and seltzer and I don't disappoint with our selections (the expected mac, coleslaw, potato salads, a cold pasta and veggie salad, tomato, basil, mozz salad, Long Island corn to roast and Blueberry Lemonade Polar seltzer. $34.08. Much to my dismay, D stops at the bevy and gets a 6 pack of Zombie Dust beer $24.32. 7pm: Dinner was incredible bbq food and we end the night with s'mores around the fire pit. Time at our friends' house always feels like a short time at a resort between the chef's kitchen, salt water pool, hot tub and fire pit, I never want to leave. We are also not going to have children so I enjoy the time we get to spend with our friends' kids who are basically family. They send us home with so many leftovers and I graciously accept the fact I won't have to cook anything until Wednesday. 11pm: Stop on the service road for gas $42.50. Get home way too late for a work night, and a sales holiday no less. Get ready for bed and read until I relax enough to fall asleep TOTAL: 100.90 Weekly Total:$835.80 Week of reflection: After taking a hard look at everything financially and emotionally in my life, I sat down with D and told him my frustrations over the past few years. I told him I don't want to be anxious every time I get a Chase alert and that he spends without thinking. We agreed that $50 a week will go into his own debit account which he can use for morning coffee, beer, and whatever is his own stuff. His $100 autosave i=for him is switched to every other week for awhile. We will never get to another level relationship-wise or financially if we keep spending more than we earn or don't keep a closer eye on things. I also explained how I am his partner and not a parent and I don't enjoy nagging him about how to adult better. Any other purchase or new expense over $100 we will talk about before doing it. We will also be designating one or two days a week for errands and expenses with a list in hand so we don't go and buy unnecessary things and stop going to stores so often.
Gan 356i v2 vs Go Cube, and what "smart cubing" is like
I own two smart cubes - a Go Cube Edge and a Gan 356i v2 - and want to tell you what "smart cubing" is like. TL;DR: I love it and I totally recommend getting a smart cube! My previous Go Cube review Some pictures of Gan smart cube Here are some pros and cons of each cube I have. Go Cube:

Go Cube has worked perfectly so far. My biggest issues with it were its shape, weight and my bad recognition on it. This and not working with Cubeast on iOS made me crave another smart cube, and I got a Gan 356i v2. Gan 356i is a normal 56mm speedcube, light and fast, with medium magnets. It feels close to other Gan cubes. Corner cutting is good, Gan-specific catches that I also experience on my XS and 354M are present as well - not a big deal, compared to a heavy pillowed Go Cube. The factory app - Cube Station - is not great at all. You can see occasional Chinese in messages, the UI items are rather small, there is no iPad app. I didn't find solve stats right away. It turned out I had to tap the averages to get to them. The app recognizes rotations for gyroscope-enabled cubes, but in a crappy way. You don't hold the cube static in your hands, so it sometimes detects x moves where there weren't any. I also had a few glitches like this. If there were only stock apps, smart cubes would be just a gimmick to fool around with for a couple of days and quit. Here I come to the most interesting part: Cubeast. Cubeast is a web-based timer app for smart cubes. It supports Gan, Giiker and Go cubes. You use it in a web browser - and it's worth knowing because not all browsers support Bluetooth. Safari or Chrome in iOS don't. You need a special Bluetooth-enabled browser - Bluefy, and it only works with Gan cubes for some reason. I don't know about Android. Currently, Cubeast is very strict: it times your inspection and requires you to manually start and stop the timer. It announced 8 and 12 seconds and announces "disqualification" if you don't start the timer properly. At first, it bothered me, but then I got used to it and now I even like it. Seeing my pick up and put down times every solve make me very aware that I waste almost a second on this, and I think I'm getting better at it. Cubeast supports all major hardware timers and shows your pick up/put down times as well as pure solving time. After each solve, you get your stats like this, and if you reset your timer (or hit space on your keyboard), you get the next scramble. There are tons of stats you can enjoy after you accumulate some solves. For example, here's an ao100 of mine where you can see my average times, move count, TPS, splits, recognition/execution time as well as the list of solves. There are also various graphs which I'm not yet familiar with. You can sort stats by cube, timekeyboard/touchscreen, cross color, etc. And it syncs your stats on the fly! You don't need to export/import manually or even refresh the page. Cubeast supports different solving methods: CFOP, CFOP 2-look OLL (to track two stages of OLL separately), FreeFOP, LBL, three variations of Petrus, Roux, ZB, and three variations of ZZ. Depending on the method you choose, it tracks your splits. I've encountered one problem with my Gan smart cube. It worked perfectly with my iPhone and iPad, but on PC, there was a little lag with scrambling, and about half of my solves ended up in a desync: the cube stopped sending signals to the app, and the cube graphic stopped in an unsolved state. Fortunately, u/cubeast_com suggested a fix: place the Bluetooth adapter closer to the cube. So I did. I plugged it into a USB extension cord and fixed it to the underside of my desk - and the problem was solved! Since then, I did a ton of solves without any desyncs. If you use a laptop, you'll hardly get this issue because it is on your desk and thus close to the cube in your hands. When I was going to write this review, I took the cube apart to make some photos of the internals. Gan 356i has a semi-transparent white ball core similar to Go Cube's. There is a LED inside, and it blinks when charging (and goes off when charged), and also lights up when the cube wakes up. The pieces are smaller because they need to make room for the ball core. The corner stalks and torpedoes are huge. The center pieces and corner stalks have holes: the charging prongs go through them. There is a tensioning system: a clear nut is placed over a spring and locked with the core tabs. When I tried to take one out, it jumped out and hit me in the eye. Oops! :( There are two sets of different springs included which I have not tried. There is one point worth noting: according to Cubeast knowledge base, you should keep all the core tabs not parallel to the sides of the cube to avoid lags. The core is not one piece like on a normal cube, but rather six pieces sticking out of the ball core and rotating. The nut is fixed in place, and you rotate the core stalk to change the setting on the nut or take it out. After I assembled the cube, I couldn't wake it up anymore. I turned all the faces forward and back to no avail. I charged the cube - it blinked and stopped blinking after it was full, but still didn't wake up. I took it apart once more and didn't see anything wrong. I posted a comment in DDT in desperation and wrote a draft of an email to Ziicube support. I didn't know what to blame: dropping the cube on the mat when stopping the timer or taking it apart. Neither is something you should not do to a speedcube, right? After a couple of hours I randomly thought that it's just a normal cube now, picked it up and did a solve. And it lit up! After that, I connected it to Cubeast again, and it worked just like before. Since then, I've been using the cube (including dropping on the mat) for two days without any problems. My wild guess is that it was some random internal software problem. Maybe I should have disconnected the cube from my PC before taking it apart. Someone told me they had a same problem which just went away after some time. Now for a little FAQ. Gyroscope: do I need it? The short answer is: currently, no. All it is good for is make the cube dance on the display of the stock app while you scramble or solve the actual cube. Rotations are not properly recognized anywhere: Go Cube app does not log them at all, Gan Cube Station tries to but messes it up, Cubeast does not support gyroscope. From what I've seen in Cube Station, I guess it's not easy to track rotations properly because you don't hold the cube upright all the time but do a lot of small countermoves. Do I get proper solve reconstructions? Cubeast reconstructions are the best you can currently get. It puts cross on bottom (or Roux blocks on bottom left and right), detects slice moves and does reconstructions based on the method you use. Sometimes it detects slices where aren't any (like E moves in RUD G perms), but if you got a PB or otherwise noteworthy solve, you can recall your rotations and edit the reconstruction on alg.cubing.net. Which cube do you recommend to get? Get a Gan. Gan 356i Play is probably the best option now - it's cheaper and may have a longer battery life because there is no gyroscope. I got Gan 356i v2 just in case gyroscope becomes useful some day. Ziicube has pretty nice prices for both Gan smart cubes. I'd love to have a cube that combines the strong sides of both Gan and Go cube: reliable, with long lasting battery and strong Bluetooth connection, with good native app and Cubeast support.
